It’s important to keep an eye on children’s hearing, even if they have passed previous tests, such as the Universal Newborn Hearing Screen, as their hearing can impact their speech and language development.
Come and see Hear and Say’s qualified audiologists for a hearing test. We can do hearing tests for babies, children and adults and provide recommendations to suit you.
At Hear and Say we have a unique set up as a one-stop-shop for both hearing and speech therapy services for all ages. Book an appointment with our qualified speech pathologists for a speech and language assessment to get an understanding of your child’s current developmental level and any communication difficulties they may be experiencing.
There are a few signs to keep an eye out for in children who might be experiencing speech or language development delays. Sometimes it's difficult to know if a child is taking longer to reach a milestone or is experiencing communication difficulties. In the first two years below are some key signs of speech and language delay:
Not saying single words by the age of 15 months
Not saying two word phrases by the age of two
Has difficultly in following instructions
Struggles to put words together in a sentence
Leaving words out of sentences
Unable to articulate or understand, at a basic level, what is being said to them
Speech that is produced is not clear or is difficult to understand
We work to support children who have been diagnosed with a hearing loss as well as children who do not have a hearing loss, and may be experiencing speech or language difficulties such as:
Late talkers (not talking)
Middle ear concerns
Speech delay (clarity or articulation in speech)
Prior to commencing speech therapy with children, our paediatric speech pathologist will complete a speech and language assessment. This assessment uses standardised tests to assess your child's developmental level and their ability to communicate and interact with people around them.
Every child’s hearing journey is different – from being diagnosed at birth to a hearing loss that is picked up as a toddler or during school years.
With a combination of hearing technology and specialist speech therapy support (known as listening and spoken language therapy), kids can grow up able to hear and speak just like their siblings and friends around them.
Hear and Say's group speech therapy or group social skills workshops help babies, children and young adults develop their social and communication skills through age-appropriate activities.
No matter where you live, Hear and Say can support you via online speech therapy. You may even opt to have a combination of in-centre and online appointments.
We work with families to teach children to learn to speak through listening. We guide and coach parents so they are equipped with age-appropriate strategies from interactive play to reading books that they can carry over to everyday situations at home. Services are individualised for each person and family we see so that everyone can reach their goals and potential.

Prior to your speech therapy appointment, our team will be in touch to send you a link to complete background information that will be helpful in your first appointment.
Each of our appointments are individually tailored to yours or your child's needs by our speech pathologists.
Speech therapy starts with a speech and language assessment to understand the child’s current developmental level and ability to interact with people around them.
Our team of speech pathologists work with children and their families to develop the child’s speech through listening. This approach closely follows a child’s natural developmental progression in listening, language, speech, literacy, cognition and social skills.
You don’t need a referral for speech therapy however you can get a Team Care Plan or a GP Management Plan (GPMP) to access some Medicare rebates. If you have private health, you may also be able to use your extras cover.
If you want to get speech therapy for your child, click here to book an appointment or phone our friendly team.
Speech therapy ranges in cost and is dependent on the length and number of sessions required.
Speech therapy is not fully covered by Medicare, you may be able to get a Team Care plan or GPMP plan or you may be eligible to obtain NDIS funding for a speech therapist.
Our speech therapists provide evidence-based and individualised strategies for families to undertake in a home setting with their child. The overall effectiveness of speech therapy is largely dependent on how much practice is carried out outside of the appointment.
Speech therapy sessions typically run for about 30 to 45 minutes on a regular basis and will be dependent on the goals identified from a child’s speech and language assessment.
The age in which a child should start speech therapy will vary from child to child depending on the delays they may be experiencing. As soon as you have a concern relating to a delay, a speech and language assessment is encouraged as early intervention is key to outcomes.
