“We were in shock and denial for a while following the diagnosis, but we were ready to do whatever it took to ensure Iyla could live life like any other child.” – Brooke, mum to five-year-old Iyla.

Brooke and her partner, Bart first discovered their daughter had a hearing loss when she failed her newborn hearing screening in hospital.

From their home in Cooktown, the first two years of Iyla’s life saw the family travelling to Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane for numerous hearing tests, ear mould fittings for hearing aids, and then cochlear implant surgery.

“When Iyla had her cochlear implants switched on at 18 months old, it was an amazing moment because we knew it was all up from there for our little girl,” said Brooke.

“The world is full of opportunities and we would love Iyla to be able to follow any path in life she chooses and not to be held back for any reason.”

Travel time has now significantly reduced, with the family accessing listening and spoken language therapy with Hear and Say via telepractice.

“Hear and Say has changed our life immensely; not only teaching Iyla speech and language skills but also teaching us how to guide her through any obstacles she fears along the way. We couldn’t be more thankful for Hear and Say and their involvement right from the start of our hearing journey,” said Brooke.
